Medicines: Macrogol For Chronic Constipation

The treatment of chronic constipation with the drug Macrogol is only a support in combination with hygiene measures and a change in diet. Changes in lifestyle, diet and sufficient exercise are essential in this case.

Macrogol (polyethylene glycol) is a laxative medicine that binds water and artificially increases intestinal volume. This improves bowel movement and the increased water content makes the stool softer, which makes it possible to defecate.

However, macrogol should only be used as short as possible to prevent side effects. It is only an aid, in addition to hygiene measures and proper nutrition. For example, an adequate water supply and a diet rich in fiber are essential.

In addition, those affected should exercise regularly and adopt healthy habits to make it easier to defecate. Otherwise, the drug Macrogol is only a short-term solution that does not eliminate the problem.

Macrogol: which dosage is recommended?

This medication can be taken at any time of the day with food, with a drink, or on its own. The dosage depends on the extent and severity of the constipation.

After two days you can reduce the dose. Adults with chronic constipation usually take 1 to 3 sachets per day. However, in most cases a maximum of 2 sachets is sufficient, but  in some cases 3 is required. Treatment usually lasts two weeks. If the constipation persists after this time, be sure to see a doctor.

In the case of coprostasis (congestion of feces in the large intestine), the dosage is higher. It may take up to 8 sachets in a six hour period for a maximum of three days. Once the solution has been prepared, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to six hours.

Ingestion

Dissolve the contents of the sachet in half a glass of water and drink this solution as soon as possible. If you are being treated for coprostasis, it is easier to dissolve 8 sachets in 1 liter of water. 

If necessary, you can increase the dose to two sachets a day. However, it is best to wait a few days to see the results. Macrogol begins to work 24 to 48 hours after ingestion.

What are the side effects of macrogol?

This drug can cause several side effects, which are classified according to their frequency:

• Very rare side effects:  Anaphylactic reactions such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the neck or face are very rare. Hypersensitivity, which shows up as an allergic skin reaction, is also rare.
• Very common side effects:  diarrhea can occur at high doses. However, this disappears after one to two days after stopping macrogol.
• Common reactions:  pain and abdominal distension may occur.

Contraindications and interactions 

Contraindications to this drug include the following:

• Children under 12 years
• Intestinal perforation

• Small intestine obstruction
• Inflammatory bowel disease

Macrogol is also useful in cases of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients it contains, in ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and toxic megacolon contraindicated. To avoid drug interactions, do not take any other medicines for one hour before and after taking this drug.

Constipation: Other Measures Are Also Important!

Whether or not laxatives are necessary and in what dosage depends on the extent of the constipation. Osmotic drugs like macrogol are recommended because they are safe and well tolerated. However, if the affected person does not change their lifestyle, eating habits and do not exercise, macrogol alone will not achieve the desired effect.
